Background of the Study
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also known as crib death, is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant, typically during sleep, and is one of the leading causes of infant mortality worldwide (Nwankwo et al., 2023). Although the exact cause of SIDS is not known, factors such as unsafe sleep practices, respiratory infections, and genetic conditions have been identified as contributing factors (Adegoke et al., 2024). Nurses, especially those working in neonatal and pediatric care units, play a crucial role in educating parents and caregivers about safe sleep practices, recognizing risk factors, and providing immediate care to infants at risk of SIDS (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). However, the knowledge and response of nurses to cases of SIDS may vary, and there is limited research on this topic in Nigeria, particularly in Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital. This study assesses the knowledge of nurses regarding SIDS and their response to cases of suspected SIDS.
Statement of the Problem
SIDS remains a major concern in neonatal care, and despite increased awareness, many infants continue to die unexpectedly (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). Nurses in Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital may not always be equipped with the most current information or practices regarding the prevention and management of SIDS. This study aims to assess the knowledge of nurses and their readiness to respond to suspected cases of SIDS in order to improve outcomes and reduce infant mortality rates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the neonatal and pediatric care units of Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital. A limitation is that the study will not assess other healthcare professionals involved in managing SIDS. Additionally, data will be gathered through self-reporting, which could introduce bias in the responses.
